This masculine-style Pinot Noir broadens onto the palate to unfold savory notes of soy, smoky tobacco leaf, dried sage, black raspberry, black tea and cracked black peppercorns. The wine finishes long and lean with an undercurrent of spiciness.
This 2011 is the first vintage of The Puncheon Pinot Noir for Robert Brittan.
The Puncheon Pinot Noir was produced from hand-selected blocks from the Brittan Vineyard. It consists predominately of the Pommard selection, blended with clones 777 and 115. The vines are planted on Riparia Gloire, 3309 and 101-14 rootstocks.
The fruit for the 2011 vintage was picked in late October. While the majority of the fruit was destemmed, 10% of the fruit was selected for whole-cluster fermentation. The juice is fermented in a 400-liter, double French oak barrel known as a puncheon.
The wine was aged in French Oak barrels, approximately 35% new, for 10 months.
